Trinity Says Goodbye to Mr Turner after 32 years

The end of this unique school year also saw the retirement of long serving staff member Mr John Turner.

Mr Turner joined the school in 1988 as Head of Music before going on to carry out a number of different roles across the school. These included Science Teacher and Data Administrator, which meant leading on the development and support of SIMS and fully focusing on this role after finishing teaching four years ago.

John will be remembered as a dedicated and loyal member of the school community, a supportive colleague and an inspirational teacher. Everyone at the school wishes him the very best in retirement.

As part of his leaving gift, a number of current and former members of staff sent in well-wishing messages including two former heads, Kevin Cheney (Headmaster 1986 – 1992) who first appointed John, and Colin Ashby (Headmaster 1992 – 2008). We think that the following two extracts sum up the impact John has had over the years.

“My memories of John are of a skilful teacher able to get the best out of his pupils. John is a balanced, calm, good natured and dependable person who is easy to get on with and an inspiration to his pupils. He was always willing to help out and to move the school forward. He has obviously, over the years, been part of the backbone of staff at Trinity and involved himself very effectively in many areas of school life. I am sure he deserves his retirement but will be a loss to the school.” – Kevin Cheney

“As you approach the end of your last term we wanted to wish you a very long, happy and healthy retirement. Your service to Trinity School, during our time was considerable and your flexibility as a teacher invaluable. Not only did you teach music, where you were Head of Department, you also taught Information Technology, Religious Studies and Science. Our daughters really enjoyed your teaching, with your calm and patient manner. Both enjoyed singing at Trinity and they still do, so we are all grateful to you. You will also be remembered for composing music including some Christmas Carols and the Trinity 10 March for the School’s 10th anniversary. The Exeter Cathedral Choir, where you sang Bass as a Lay Vicar, also benefitted from your talents over the years.
