Welcome to Sixth Form Mathematics
“It is numbers, not words, which make up the language of the universe.”
“Mathematics is the Empress of the Sciences. Without her, there would be no physics,
nor chemistry, nor cosmology. Any field of study depending on statistics, geometry,
or any kind of calculation would simply cease to be. And then, there are the practical
applications: without maths there is no architecture, no commerce, no accurate maps,
or time-keeping: therefore no navigation, nor aviation, nor astronomy.”
“She is all-powerful and she rules ruthlessly.”
Marcus du Sautoy (Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University)
It is with this in mind that we realise what an awesome responsibility and privilege
it is to teach mathematics. It is this realisation that is the source of our motivation
and enthusiasm for mathematics and for the teaching of mathematics at Trinity School.
We view the teaching and learning of mathematics as an exciting journey of discovery
as we search for patterns and develop mathematical skills through investigation,
discussion, practise and application.
Aims & Objectives
At Trinity School we aim:
- to develop, maintain and stimulate students interest, fascination and enjoyment
in mathematics.
- to develop students familiarity with appropriate mathematical
concepts, techniques and vocabulary and with how mathematics can be used and applied
to the real world.
- to encourage students to develop personal qualities such
as perseverance, initiative, self-confidence
- to encourage students to develop personal qualities such as perseverance, initiative,
self-confidence and independence and to be able to work both individually and co-operatively
in a mathematical setting.
- to enable all students to have equal access to mathematics
and to experience success in their work at their own level.
- to provide opportunities
for students to stimulate higher order logical thinking and problem solving skills.
Key Stage 5
Students can study AS and A-Level Mathematics and AS and A-Level Further Mathematics.
Students are prepared for the Edexcel Examinations and use Pearson Edexcel AS and
A-Level text books. The courses at AS and A-Level consist of core pure mathematics
units and optional applied mathematics units. The applied mathematics units are
Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Mathematics.
Mathematics Support
To help pupils with any mathematical problems, we run Maths Support Clubs for various
year groups. This provides help and advice for ongoing class work or homework and
for test or exam revision. In addition, Trinity School has a strong
Learning Support
Department
, which provides one to one, small group and classroom support.
The UK Mathematical Challenge
Each year we enter a number of our more able mathematicians for the UK Mathematical
Challenge, at either Junior, Intermediate or Senior level. The aim of these Mathematical
Challenges is to stimulate greater interest in mathematics across the 11-18 age
group, encouraging participation and rewarding enthusiasm and achievement.
