Welcome to Sixth Form Life Skills
Trinity aims to provide its sixth form students with a well rounded education that
prepares them for entry into university life or their chosen careers as thoughtful,
articulate, evaluative and practical young adults. The Life Skills course includes
areas of study that would not usually be addressed in traditional academic A level
courses such as morality, ethics, prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping, politics
(local, national and international), drugs and alcohol awareness, sex education,
relationship management, relaxation skills and on a more practical level cookery,
meditation and massage!
Students take part in a number of units throughout the sixth form that facilitate
their personal, social, moral and emotional development and provide them with information
to enable them to make informed choices about their health, parenting, and sexual
behaviour. In addition to this, the course provides learners with evaluative, cognitive
and emotional intelligence skills that will enhance their performance in other academic
subjects and in all areas of their life. Students explore a wide range of issues
and develop their ability to articulate their ideas and engage in debate. These
skills will stand them in good stead for interviews for employers and universities,
particularly if they aspire to attend universities in the Russell Group where competition
for places is extremely strong and excellent A level qualifications in themselves
do not guarantee acceptance.
The course was introduced in 2007 and has proven to be warmly received by the student
body. In addition to this, teachers have commented that they found that even the
most entrenched thinkers providing more thoughtful and balanced arguments in their
written work and class discussions. An added benefit may also be the reduction in
examination stress reported by staff as a result of the relaxation skills module.
