Welcome from the Red Library
Situated within the heart of Trinity and within the existing
'Red Library' it now holds between 12,000 and 15,000 books as well as other complementary
resources. I suppose you could say that these resources help students
with their projects and, supplies the teaching staff with that little extra to enhance
and give “a special something” to a lesson.
The Library Resources
Trinity's Red Library has a library system installed called "Alice." It
meets the current requirements of our school both quietly and efficiently. We have
audio books, VHS/DVD, music CDs and music scores together with both English and
international newspapers, journals and magazines which cater for the varying age
groups both in academic and reading for enjoyment and relaxation. The resources
in hte library complement each other and therefore are second to none. Not only
are they useful individually but they cross the curriculum so that whatever students
and staff need, they are bound to find something that will cover a subject in one
form or another.
Using the Library
Students in year 8 are encouraged to train for the Library Monitor certificate.
It takes one term and covers not only the understanding of how a library is run,
including the Dewey Decimal System, but also how to make use of the Reference library
as means of research along side that of the Internet. As part of their training
they have great fun researching one of the many libraries that exist from sports,
law, toys and many, many others. One student even researched the new 'Library of
Alexandria' and it's ancient counterpart which was totally destroyed by fire when
the Roman legions conquered Egypt. Not only do our students take the certificate
for their own benefit they are actively encouraged to put their skills towards helping
other students.
The Red Library is a great place to be, not only for reading and researching but
also for listening too - we have a special club called The Audio Book. Students
arrive at club time and make themselves comfortable on our giant bean bags whilst
whiling away an hour listening to a story rather than reading it for themselves.
Surprisingly, many children today never have stories read to them so, for them,
it’s a new experience.
Visits and Workshops
Our library has visiting celebrities such as authors, who in the past have given
'read-ins' followed by workshop sessions on story writing; we've had Dartmoor poets
who have entertained us with interesting talks on 'Spooky Dartmoor' poetry and its
origins; an Historian/science teacher who gave us a one day talk and workshop on
Winged Dinosaurs and how they connect to the present day. In the winter time we
have lunch time starter sessions in Chess - a great favourite, especially when it’s
raining!
The Library Cup
In 2003/2004 The Library Cup was introduced, especially for those students who have
worked really hard to achieve a good literacy/reading standard. This is
of special value for those students who have the disadvantage in reading due to
Dyslexia and for our international students who may have limited English understanding
when they arrive. Two of our international students have been winners both in 2006/7
and 2007/8. Both students spoke limited English when they started at Trinity but
within a term not only were they speaking fluently but equally, reading English
fiction and non-fiction, which is quite an achievement.
Do come along to the library, if you are a visitor, or a current pupil – we
would be very happy to see you.
