Welcome to Sixth Form EAL

The role of the EAL department is twofold: to improve pupils’ knowledge, skills and confidence in the English language and to enable them to better access the rest of their GCSE, AS or A-level curriculum in English through study skills and subject-related support. To this end, we have a team of 3 qualified and experienced teachers who have not only taught here in the U.K. but also overseas. Every year, we help around 70 – 80 students from many different nationalities to improve their English here at Trinity School.

The Sixth Form EAL students recently went on a trip to Bath - read about their experiences here and here. (PDFs)

International Students who study at Trinity School

Topics & Aims/Objectives

We prepare pupils for a series of English exams which are recognised worldwide by universities and employers.

University of Cambridge ESOL:

  • KET (Key English Test)
  • PET (Preliminary English Test)
  • FCE (First Certificate in English)
  • CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)
  • CPE (Certificate in Proficiency in English)
  • IGCSE (International GCSE in English as a Second Language)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

Extra Curricular

We take international students on day trips to a nearby town or city each half term. As most of our students are boarders, they live in the school and can take part in a wide range of social, sporting and cultural activities all year round – see our Boarding Department pages  for more details.

Exam Results

Each year, the majority of our students achieve their required grade in the Cambridge ESOL qualifications, for example a C grade or above in their IGCSE or First Certificate exams, or their required grade in the IELTS exam (usually 6 or above on the ascending 1-9 scale).
