Welcome to Sixth Form Business & Economics

The Business & Economics department aims to introduce and promote the study of both these relevant subjects and to inspire the entrepreneurs and economists of the future. Our AS/A2 courses (Applied Business and Economics) provide a wide range of learning experiences and develop skills that will be useful in everyday life. The department aims to stimulate curiosity, enjoyment and interest in the courses through hands-on practical application of the topics and through conferences and visits to local businesses. Both courses provide the scope to challenge the most able whilst offering a course which is accessible to all. Our excellent departmental results reflect this success; in recent years our students have not only accessed the highest grades but also have added value to their GCSE results. In 2008 the department was awarded a Good Schools Award for the best performance in the UK by boys taking A2 Applied Business.

Aims & Curriculum

Within the department we teach Applied Business (Single & Double Awards) in years 12 and 13. The core fundamentals of the course are based around practical experiences, coursework and preparation for the examinations. This qualification provides a more vocational perspective, allowing students to interact with the business environment and experience real authentic business practices. Prior knowledge of the subject is not essential.

Within department we also have vastly experienced Economics teachers who teach the subject at A level (Edexcel specification). We aim to help students appreciate how economics contributes to an understanding of the wider economic and social environment, through encouraging a critical and thoughtful approach to study. Pupils study four units, which concentrate on how markets work and fail, how the economy is managed, business economics and the global economy.
