Welcome to Senior History
“A nation that forgets its Past has no Future”
The main aim of the History Department at Trinity School is to combine academic
excellence with enjoyment of the subject for its own sake. Teachers in the department
place a strong emphasis both on ensuring that all students reach their full potential
in terms of examination results and also on the many exciting opportunities for
personal enrichment that History can offer. Trips to the First World War Battlefields,
Normandy, Totnes Castle, Buck fast Abbey, Buckland Abbey and Bristol are all part
of the curriculum.
Topics & Aims/Objectives
By its very nature, History contributes more to the spiritual, moral and ethical
development of the individual student and to their awareness of citizenship than
almost any other subject in the curriculum. The centrality to success as an historian
(at any level) of being able to understand and respect different points of view
provides an invaluable "life skill", helps to combat bigotry and intolerance, and
is central to the teaching of Trinity School students of all ages.
A study of the past enhances students' understanding of these issues in relation
to their lives in the Twenty-First Century. The History Course at Trinity School
is specifically designed to give opportunities for these issues to be confronted
in all year groups by studying topics that require them to think and make
judgements
in all these areas:
- Results at both GCSE and Advanced Level have been consistently high over the last
few years, with the vast majority of students at Advanced Level obtaining grades
A to C.
- The skills taught in History lessons leave students well placed to succeed in the
- wider world, including the fields of law, business and the media.
- Students develop their skills in ICT and information retrieval, have wide experience
of a range of presentation styles and become increasingly well-motivated, independent
learners.
Key Stage 3
In Key Stage 3 all students will study History. Years 7 and 8 study British History
from Medieval times up to the Stuarts and a section on Slavery and in Year 9 they
study World War 1 and the Holocaust. They use a variety of text books, film footage
and even role plays as methods of learning.
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 History is a very popular option subject and the students study the
Edexcel Modern History syllabus which includes topics on America, the Cold War,
Russia in Revolution and the 2nd World War. Again they use a variety of materials
from films and pictures to text and we use a variety of methods from Hotseating
to analysing and debating.
Extra Curricular
As a department we offer support for coursework and run support sessions at lunchtime
and in club time. Phillip Jones takes an active part in the CCF as Captain attending
many of their residential trips and we are looking at running a History club for
all those budding Historians to get their hands on some Historical sources and to
work as detectives!
Welcome to Senior Geography
The Geography department believes that the subject should be taught through direct
experience of the real world as well as classroom instruction. Enthusiastic staff
with a wide variety of experience ensure that the subject is brought to life and
that results are outstanding.
Topics and Aims & Curriculumm
Pupils, aged 11 to 14 years, follow a Geography Course at Key Stage 3 (Years 7 -
9). This covers a range of Physical, Human and Environmental Topics as well as Geographical
Skills and Enquiry Techniques.
In Year 10, pupils have the opportunity to take a two-year course at GCSE Level
(AQA Specification 'A'). As part of this course there is a residential field course
week on the Isle of Arran, off the west coast of Scotland.
Geography is a popular subject in the School with two sets at GCSE level and a growing
number of pupils following the subject at Advanced Level.
