Welcome to Senior English
The English department at Trinity School has a clear ethos: It aims to provide a
successful experience of learning for all pupils taught in English lessons.
We aim to promote the pleasure and value of reading at all ages, to enable students
to achieve their full potential through support and encouragement, and to help students
to grow and develop into perceptive adults with an understanding of the value of
other cultures, viewpoints and beliefs. We encourage our students to write creatively
and imaginatively, to understand the importance of empathy and to become effective
communicators through both the written and spoken word.
The English Curriculum
All students at Key Stage Three study a variety of authors. They work on developing
their own writing and reading skills. We introduce students to works by Shakespeare,
alongside works by modern authors. We study the power of language, its presentation
through different genres, and the importance of context on a writer. Students are
introduced to poetry and media texts.
At Key Stage Four all students are entered for GCSE English and English Literature.
They follow AQA specifications which include the study of Shakespeare and pre Twentieth
Century novelists. They develop skills in writing to argue, explore and persuade.
