Welcome to Senior Design Technology
Design Technology provides situations which encourage pupils to use their intellectual
and practical skills to solve problems. They undertake research and analysis, produce
ideas and then develop and make a viable solution using appropriate materials and
technology. Through these situations pupils develop an understanding of materials
and components, technological concepts and their applications and communication
methods. They have opportunities to express themselves creatively.
Topics & Aims & Curriculum
Within this department we teach pupils to design and make quality products and to
consider the effects and implications of technological activity including industrial
practices and the environment.
In Key Stage 3 the emphasis is on the development of good practice and designing
and making skills. All pupils in years 7 – 9 move around the subject areas to gain
experience in the use of a variety of materials; wood, metal, plastics, food, textiles
and electronic components. They will be introduced to the elements of designing
and making with these materials.
At Key stage 4 pupils opt for a GCSE in Resistant Material Technology or Home Economics-Food
and Nutrition. These courses are a natural progression from the work in Key Stage
3 allowing the pupils to develop their experience in their chosen area.
