Welcome to Senior Business & Economics

The Business & Economics department aims to introduce and promote the study of these relevant subjects and to inspire the entrepreneurs and economists of the future. Our GCSE courses (Business Studies and Business & Communication Studies) provide a wide range of learning experiences and develop skills that will be useful in everyday life. The department aims to stimulate curiosity, enjoyment and interest in the courses through hands-on practical application of the topics and through frequent visits to a range of businesses.

Topics & Aims/Objectives

Within this department we teach Business Studies and Business & Communication Studies in years 10 and 11 and base the core fundamentals of the curriculum around practical experiences, coursework and preparation for the examinations.

The department offers students the opportunity to attend coursework clubs and examination revision clubs to supplement the work carried out in class.

Course Summary - GCSE Business Studies

Marketing and Enterprise Module - Market research and data collection, The marketing mix, Marketing in wider business environment, Enterprise and the entrepreneur, The business plan. Controlled Assessment (up to 10 hours on research, up to 6 hours writing a report) with a 25% weighting.

Business and People Module - The structure and need for business activity, Business ownership, Growth and location, The workforce in business, Employment and retention, Organisation and communication. Written exam 1 hour Short answer data response questions. 25% weighting.

Production, Finance and the External Business Environment Module - Using and managing resources to produce goods and services, Types of production methods, Management and control of production, Production costs o Financial information and decision making, Sources of finance, Financial forecasting & analysis, External influences on business activity. Written exam 1 hour and 30 minutes Questions based on pre-released case study. 50% weighting.

GCSE Business & Communication Systems

Businesses & their communication systems - An introduction to communication systems and the business contexts they operate in. Written Exam (1 hour 30 mins), 50% weighting.

Developing Business Communication systems - An introduction to communication systems and the business contexts they operate in. Controlled assessment Up to 10 hours on research Up to 5 hours on writing up report. 25% weighting.

 ICT Skills for Business and communication systems - Develop and use knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to maintain and use business communication systems based on standard office software (Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint). Practical Exam (1 hour). 25% weighting.
