Religious Education in The Prep Department
Trinity School
Back to Prep Subjects
Welcome to Prep RE
In the Prep Department, Religious Education gives all children a grounding in the
major faiths and allows children to discover what is meant by the “Christian values”
which underpin the family atmosphere here at Trinity. We celebrate Christian festivals
through the year in a variety of ways, ranging from church services to pancake races
and, recently, a puppet workshop that culminated in a whole school performance of
the Nativity.
Regardless of children’s religious backgrounds, they are encouraged to learn from
religion as well as learn about it. Visits to places of worship take place
and links with the local diocese ensure a well–balanced, up to date curriculum and
access to excellent resources.
Aims and Curriculum
We teach religion in a variety of ways, using real artefacts, good quality online
resources and visits to places of worship. Our main aims are: to teach children
to respect one another’s beliefs, whatever they may be; to provide a secure environment
where they can develop their own faith; to enable them to understand Christian virtues
and how values have shaped the School’s ethos.
The curriculum is largely based on Christianity but alongside this other religions
are explored. Year 1 introduces the idea of having beliefs using Christianity as
a starting point. Year 2 touch on Judaism and Hinduism. Judaism, Hinduism, Islam
and Buddhism are studied in years 3 to 6.
Lessons are taught mainly by class teachers although at key Stage 2, the co-ordinator
teaches Years 5 and 6 and the Year 5 teacher is responsible for Year 3. Staff are
particularly creative in their approach and are sensitive to the need for time for
children to develop their spirituality and their own beliefs.
