Music in The Prep Department
Trinity School
Back to Prep Subjects
Welcome to Prep Music
Music within the Prep Department is flourishing, with all pupils taught twice a
week in the purpose built music suite. This room is fully equipped with an electric
piano, CD / DVD / Video facility, 20 keyboards with individual headphones, and a
full range of percussion instruments. It is situated well away from the main school
building, so the sound does not interfere with the rest of the school community.
Aims & Curriculum
‘Music Express’ is at the core of the curriculum in the Prep Department, with every
child receiving a weekly lesson based on the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority
(QCA) scheme of work and fulfilling the requirements of the Music National Curriculum.
The six key areas covered throughout each year are ‘sounds’, ‘duration’, ‘rhythm
& pulse’, ‘pitch’, ‘instruments and symbols’ and ‘timbre, tempo and dynamics’
During their second weekly lesson, children in Key Stage 1 learn to sing through
nursery rhymes etc, play rhythm games using un-tuned percussion and listen to a
variety of different music and songs. Children in Key Stage 2 all learn the keyboard
using ‘Kids Keyboard Course’ and are able to work at their own pace.
Extra Curricular
Every child in Key Stage 2 is encouraged to sing and belong to the school choir,
which rehearses once a week in school time. The choir sings a wide variety of music,
with the emphasis on singing being fun, and performs at various school based events
and concerts throughout the year including Harvest Festival, Christmas and the Summer
Concert.
In addition to this, the Chamber Choir, which is accessible by audition, tackles
a much more demanding repertoire and performs both in school and in the wider
community, with recent visits being paid to the Devon Performing Arts Festival,
(where we have won our class in consecutive years), the Devon County Show and St. Michael’s Church,
Teignmouth Flower Festival. Rehearsals take place during the lunch break.
The School is well supported by a large number of visiting peripatetic instrumental
teachers and about a third of Prep pupils receive a weekly instrumental lesson on
a variety of orchestral instruments as well as piano, guitar and drums.
