Mathematics in The Prep Department
Trinity School
Back to Prep Subjects
Welcome to Prep Maths
Great care is taken to give our children a secure understanding of numbers, whilst
nurturing their innate enthusiasm for problem solving. Numeracy is taught by class
teachers. We have an experienced team who communicate regularly on issues such as
marking, teaching strategies and ensuring steady progression from one year to another.
The Department is well resourced, with up to date text books, materials and all
the learning opportunities offered by modern Interactive Whiteboard technology.
Children take SATS tests in Year 2 and Year 6, obtaining excellent results given
that Trinity Prep is a non-selective school.
Aims and Curriculum
Teaching is based on the National Numeracy Strategy but is supplemented by activities
and ideas that extend this to cater for those of all abilities. We believe in giving
children a particularly strong foundation in number work. Within our Early Years’
classes, the children explore and use numbers, shape, space, measures and problem
solving tactics through practical and fun activities. They progress to more formal
methods of recording by the end of Key Stage 1.
Great emphasis is placed on learning multiplication tables (an exciting Tablethon
competition takes place in the Spring Term!) and formal written methods of calculation
are taught as soon as the children are ready for them. Pupils are usually streamed
at Year 6 to ensure efficient preparation for SATs exams at ages 6 and 11. Learning
Support is available on a one to one basis as necessary.
Mathematical skills are also developed discretely through all the other subjects.
We are acutely aware of the need to equip children with life skills as early as
possible and many of these come under the umbrella of mathematics.
