Welcome to The Prep Library
The Junior Library, situated in a lovely room with a wonderful view towards the
sea, provides a calm, reflective environment for the children to access over 4,000
books.
Aims and Curriculum
We aim to encourage reading, learning how to make the best use of a library and
to treat books with care. We hope their experiences in the Junior Library will encourage
the children to join a public library if they don’t already belong to one.
Prep 3 to Prep 6 attend timetabled Library classes each week. They learn the meaning
of ‘reference, non fiction and fiction’ and where the different sections are located.
The children are encouraged not to select the first book they see but to browse,
learning to choose books that not only interest them but which are at the correct
level for them.
The Library is used for research by children and teachers and is continually being
updated with new resources. Each child is issued with a library card and we operate
the Dewey Catalogue System. The children learn that each bar code resembles a ‘fingerprint’
enabling tracking of every book on loan. If there is any doubt about which copy
of a book has been borrowed, the child can be shown on the computer the ‘loan history’
of the book, including their name.
Extra Curricular Activities
A dedicated team of Library Assistants from Year 6 give up their break time once
a week to put books away. They are a vital part of the smooth running of the Junior
Library and to their delight, when putting books away, they often come across interesting
books that they had not previously seen on the shelves!
