Geography in The Prep Department
Trinity School
Back to Prep Subjects
Welcome to Prep Geography
Preparatory Department Geography stimulates pupils’ curiosity, interest and enjoyment
of the subject, whilst also cultivating their sense of location, knowledge of places
and a respect for differing cultures and their environment. We encourage open, enquiring
minds that are aware of contemporary issues, and therefore develop the pupils’ informed
opinions and their support of such opinions with reasoned arguments.
Aims and Curriculum
Throughout the whole Department, Geography lessons are exciting, stimulating and
energising. A range of topics are covered, from the local environment to countries
far away e.g. India, Kenya, Brazil and Australia. Map skills are taught from the
Reception Class and continued throughout the Year Groups giving progression to learning.
The skills needed for the subject are reinforced throughout the curriculum in a
creative and practical way, thus ensuring that each learning style is met. Many
trips are run through Geography including The River Lemon, Charmouth Beach, Haldon
Forest, Shaldon, Teignmouth and Teignmouth Beach.
The subject is well resourced and the use of ICT is widely used, particularly within
independent studies carried out by the pupils, to both consolidate previous learning
and enrich a topic.
In the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, Geography is taught as part of a larger
topic by the class teachers. Within Key Stage 2, Geography is taught discretely
for one hour a week, usually by the class teacher.
Extra Curricular Activities
A Geography Club is run during a lunchtime. Here each individual tests their general
knowledge of the subject e.g. capitals, names of rivers and countries of the world.
The club is open to all pupils, especially those who are recognised as having a
talent for the subject.
