French in The Prep Department
Trinity School
Back to Prep Subjects
Welcome to Prep French
Trinity Prep Department is fortunate to have a French specialist teaching the subject.
This helps to ensure that teaching at this early stage is soundly based and delivered
with sparkle and enthusiasm.
Aims and Curriculum
In the Prep Department we teach French to all children in Years 1-6 for 1 hour a
week. We teach children to know and understand how to ask and answer questions,
use correct pronunciation and grammar, memorise words, interpret meaning, understand
basic grammar, use dictionaries, work in pairs and groups, and communicate in French
and look at life in another culture.
We use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement
in the subject; these include games, role play and songs, particularly action songs.
We use puppets and soft toys to demonstrate and present the language and use the
voices of native speakers in the classroom.
Listening, responding and speaking skills are emphasised in Key Stage1 and simple
reading and writing skills in Key Stage 2. We make lessons as entertaining and enjoyable
as possible, as we realise that this approach serves to develop a positive attitude
in the learning of foreign languages.
Extra Curricular Activities
Spanish is offered as a club option for children in Years 5 and 6.
