Year 8 Activities Weekend at Widemouth Bay
On the second weekend in June the majority of our Year 8 pupils spent a great time away at Outdoor Adventure UK near Widemouth Bay in North Cornwall. The purpose of the visit was to have some fun together whilst developing personal, social and group skills through a variety of activities. The activity centre is in a fantastic location on the cliff tops, overlooking the sea with plenty of space for games and ‘chilling out’. Beach games, abseiling down the 80ft cliffs, surfing, canoeing on the Bude canal, coastal traversing and problem solving activities kept everyone challenged and plenty of personal goals were achieved. This was the second year this style of weekend has been arranged for Year 8 and it looks set to become an annual tradition with places provisionally booked for next year. A student who went on the trip commented - "I really enjoyed Widemouth because it was a chance to interact with other people who I don’t normally hang out with. The instructors were really friendly and never forced us to do an activity that we really didn’t feel that we could. They taught us to push our limits to enable us to let our talents flourish. My first activity was canoeing and it was taken by Caz. She was really friendly and made sure that we were all comfortable before we entered the water. It was really relaxing and our group, Clemmie, Matt and me, really loved it. After lunch we went coastal traversing which I found really challenging. I was helped a lot by my friends and teachers and the instructors were really understanding. That night we played loads of really fun games which helped us build our team working skills. The next day we went surfing which was really fun and I was surprised that I actually got on the board even though I didn’t stand up. We had lunch and then went abseiling down an 80ft cliff and it was terrifying, I really thought I couldn’t do it but I eventually got down to the bottom. Overall I really enjoyed Widemouth Bay and would definitely go again."
