Teignmouth School’s Link With Rio Orphanage
Teignmouth School’s Link With Rio Orphanage
Pupils in Year 5 at Trinity School have been finding out what life is like for children of the same age at an orphanage in Rio de Janeiro, as part of their Geography topic on Brazil. In order to give the class as realistic an experience as possible, their teacher, Liz Parker, contacted Vera Queiroz, a chief fundraiser for Children’s Aid, the charity which founded the ‘Avicres’ Rio orphanage. Vera and her son Ricardo help to run the orphanage, supported by hard-working volunteers. It currently houses over a hundred children, aged between one and eighteen years; orphans living rough on the streets of Rio the victims of abuse, abandonment or exploitation.
Children’s Aid supports over five hundred children and their families across the Amazon region; undertaking such projects as the construction of classrooms, safe areas for games and recreation and the setting up of a football training program for young boys. Currently, they are raising funds to build a community centre in one of the poorest areas of Rio, which would also provide residential accommodation for those children most at risk.
Anyone wishing to find out more about the work done by Children’s Aid can do so online at www.childrensaid.org.uk. Donations and sponsors are gratefully received; £8 can enrol a child at a school and £5 per month can cover the cost of a child at the Rio orphanage. Vera is organising a Brazil Music and Dance evening this October and hopes that the people of Teignmouth will support this event. Further details will be available nearer the time.
