Doodle for Google Competition

Every year Google runs a national competition for all pupils attending a UK school aged 5-16 to create a doodle based on the Google lettering. This year the theme was ‘My Hero’. Doodles are judged in age groups and we entered pupils in the age group 11-14. I had a multitude of fabulous entries however as each school is limited to six entries, judging took place within the ICT team and the six we considered to have the most artistic flair, best use of software and incorporation of the ‘My Hero’ theme were submitted. Each student had to produce a supporting statement explaining who they have depicted in their doodle and why.

The students were competing for first prize which is a 2 week all expenses paid holiday to DisneyWorld Florida for themselves and their family in addition to having their doodle feature on the Google homepage for 24 hours.

This year for the first time ever, Google in association with Next Generation Learning awarded a special prize in each age group for a doodle designed entirely on a computer. Only one computer generated doodle was selected for the age group 11-14 in Devon and I’m extremely proud to announce that that prize in the form of an official certificate from Google was awarded to one of our Year 8 students, Tiana Abdullah. Considering that there were over 50,000 entries, Tiana did exceptionally well demonstrating her expertise and impressive interpretation of the ‘My Hero’ theme.
