The Red Library

Our library is a combination of the old and the new. It is unique in structure because we are situated in the original old library with a new information study room attached. So, we are able to look back to the past whilst observing the present and planning for the future through the technology of computers.

The library is not only an interesting place to come to, but a lively one with library club, board games club and displays that many of the students are responsible for.

Another eventful School Library year has ended. For me the outstanding event of the year was the visit in February by the Author Tim Bowler, who read from his latest book “Frozen Ice”, with a very interesting follow up workshop on writing a novel with students from year 7.

This year our Library Cup winner is WASOONTHARA Kamolchanok Cherry from Thailand

For me it continues to be interesting as students ask me to find out about 'this, that and some unusual other'. A major display we have had this year has been to do with Space. I managed to get a recording of the sounds of the Planets as the Voyager satellite passes on its way to the far reaches of space. Hopefully I will be expanding this further in the months to come with the help of some of our young scientists.

Throughout the months I have met visitors from many countries who have come to look around our School. Everyone on the planet must know about Harry Potter as they all say Ah! Harry Potter’s library, and, is your mail delivered by owl. I’m so glad this doesn’t really happen otherwise I’d be forever ducking
under my desk.
We have a new television with DVD/VHS facility which allows the students to view programmes on the BBC, with headphone sound receivers so others are not disturbed.

We have many new books and alternative resources. Our policy is not only to read, but to learn how to listen so we are building up an audio book collection. It is surprising how different a book seems when, having read, you then listen to the story. It becomes a new experience, sometimes quite challenging.
