A History of Britain  A rich site covering Simon Schama's acclaimed series with materials spanning the history of the British Isles from Neolithic times through to the twentieth century.
 Institute of Historical Research Founded in 1921 by A F Pollard, the Institute of Historical Research is an important resource and meeting-place for scholars from all over the world.
BBC Education History This big, versatile site is full of content on most corners of academia. However, the site only really works as a support tool for BBC TV and radio and there is little here that hasn't already been broadcast. That said, it is good to have this material under one roof and much of it stands well on its own anyway.
 The British Monarchy The government's official site dealing with everything from King Cnut's bathing habits to the inquest into the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
Brooklyn College History Department A large and intelligently-organised picture database spanning the Ancien Regime to Post-1945. You won't get access to their other sites but this is more than enough.
Castles of Wales An interesting example of a site which covers an apparently limited subject area in great detail and at the same time manages to provide an insight into far more than you would expect.
The Concord Review The online arm of the American quarterly which caters for high school students of history. There are nearly 40 sample essays contained here on subjects ranging from the Goldwater Campaign to King Arthur, all complete with endnotes and bibliography, and of a consistently high quality. The nature of the site means that it won't be of use to everyone, and certainly not as a research tool, but as exemplars for students, the essays could prove very useful.
The Guardian Century This GuardianUnlimited website offers a searchable archive of the original reports from the Guardian (and its predecessor the Manchester Guardian) from 1899 to 1999. Events covered include military actions from the Boer War to the Bosnian War, as well as social context.
Historical Map Website Another essential resource tool. Exhaustive index of ancient maps.
The Historical Association Founded in 1906 "to bring people together who share an interest in, and love for the past", the Association is open to anybody to join. The site functions mainly as a support for the association itself but has some useful information, particularly for teachers. 
History The University of London's massive, versatile website contains links to just about any level of academic research in the UK. Should be the first port of call for any serious scholar.
History of the Millennium The history of a thousand years told in 500 daily installments. Guardian Unlimited's online history of the millennium is a site that every teacher of history should bookmark and visit every day.
Hyper History Following Nothiger's World History Chart (which can be purchased here),this site promotes a synchronoptic view of history. That is, holding simultaneously in mind what was happening all across the globe to give a more rounded world-view.
World War I Trenches on the Web An evolving project being developed by Mike Iavorone in the USA. New material is being added all the time and this reflects the concerns and interests of the people who use the site and are willing to send information to the webmaster.
World War I - BBC BAFTA award-winning interactive website offering the chance to explore the human face of the First World War.
The American Experience - Vietnam on Line Beautifully designed website porviding the most comprehensive account of the Vietnam War on the Internet. Produced by the US Public Broadcasting Service to accompany their award-winning television series: Vietnam: A Television History.
Power, Politics and Protest Produced by the Public Record Office, this website explores the political changes that took place in Britain during the 19th Century.
