Coursework Guidelines

The following “Notice to Candidates” was issued by the Joint Council for General Qualifications in September 2002:

GCE, VCE, GCSE and GNVQ Examinations
Coursework and Portfolios

A REGULATIONS
1 The work which you submit for assessment must be your own.
However, you may:
(a) quote from books or any other sources: if you do, you must state which ones you have used;
(b) receive guidance from someone other than your teacher: if so you must tell your teacher, who will record the nature of the assistance given to you.
2 If you copy from someone else or allow another candidate to copy from you, or if you cheat in any other way, you may be disqualified from at least the subject concerned.
3 When you hand in your coursework or portfolio for assessment, you may be required to sign that you have understood and followed coursework and portfolio requirements for the subject.
B ADVICE
1 Keep to the deadlines your teachers set.
2 Take care of your work and keep it safe.
3 Ask your teacher if you need any guidance.
4 If you have been absent and have any problems with completing your coursework or portfolio, talk to your teacher.
ALWAYS REMEMBER—YOUR WORK MUST BE YOUR OWN

Trinity School—Coursework Policy

Failure to hand in work by the deadline can have severe repercussions for the student concerned. In many cases it is not within the power of the teacher to grant an extension as the examination boards themselves work to strict deadlines. Even when this is not the case, an extension granted to one student can delay the work of others in the group as teachers are often required to issue further clarification to students as they pass certain milestones along the way. It is also in the interest of all students that their teachers have sufficient time to mark and moderate work extremely thoroughly.

For these reasons, teachers at Trinity School take coursework deadlines very seriously. They will make every effort to ensure that the proper support for coursework is in place and students should always feel able to request help from their teacher when they are unsure. However, the work must be completed by the student and it is each student’s responsibility to meet the set deadlines. Any student missing a coursework deadline will immediately be reported to the Director of Studies with details of the work missing. The Director of Studies will see the student and, in all likelihood, issue a coursework card which effectively removes all free time from the student. The student will work under the supervision of the Director of Studies or the Head of Department concerned and be required to make some progress with the missing work each day until it is complete. If the work is not complete by Friday, the student will be held in a detention that evening between 4 and 6pm. In addition, the student will be required to get their card signed each day by the subject teacher, the Director of Studies and their parents or boarding tutor. Failure to comply at this stage will result in the student seeing the Headmaster.
