Do you know what handball is? Well, our Prep pupils do and are performing rather well.
Mr Fisher writes, ‘Our mixed handball team played in the Teignmouth Primary Schools competition over the last 2 weeks and have played with plenty of courage and skill. Jason and Benjamin led from the front, both scoring and setting up a number of goals. After the completion of all the matches we finished a very creditable second. Well played all.’
So, what is handball? Big in several other European countries, it’s still a relatively unknown sport in the UK. You may have seen it played in the Olympics: it’s a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outfield players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team (with thanks to Wikipedia).
According to the sport’s governing body for England, http://www.englandhandball.com/eha-about-us/, handball ‘uses all the general motor skills; running, jumping, throwing, catching.
•It’s water polo without water
•Lacrosse without sticks
•Football using your hands
•Basketball with a goal instead of a high hoop
The game moves fast, there’s lots of scoring and shots reach speeds in excess of 80mph,’ a standard which our Prep team are undoubtedly striving to achieve!
