Gallant performance by U16’s as they are outplayed in County Rugby final.
Well, after the excitement of the past two weeks the scene was set at Topsham Rugby Club for this year’s U16 Devon County rugby final. The support for the Trinity boys was immense, with parents, students and staff turning out in their droves, vastly outnumbering the following for Exeter School, and stretching the length of the touchline.
Sadly, in the end, it was not to be for our heroic team, and they were outplayed by a strong, well-organised and highly skilled team from Exeter School. Perhaps it could be argued that the 47-0 score-line flattered the winners a little, but nobody can deny that Exeter were an impressive side who deserved their title and will surely go on to even more success in the future.
Could things have turned out differently? Well perhaps. Trinity did not have chance to get into their own game before being hit by a couple of early tries as they struggled to contain Exeter’s well-drilled forwards. Our boys put up a brave and spirited defence, but it is fair to say that the momentum remained with the opposition for most of the remainder of the first half.
The Trinity boys nevertheless remained composed and professional at all times, resolute under pressure, and gallant in their efforts to press for a score. They always attempted to attack with their usual flair when they had the ball, and did not give up at any stage. Consequently, the second half turned out to be a much more balanced affair and Trinity threatened to break through Exeter lines on a number of occasions. It would have been a just reward had the boys been able to put some points on the board, and soften the pain of the defeat, but the Exeter defence was as solid as their attack and there was no way through.
So it was a case of disappointment but absolutely no disgrace for our U16 boys, who have had a most fantastic season, and exceeded everybody’s expectations.
Team coach Mr Larkman thanks the many parents, students and staff for their support. He summed things up perfectly when he said, ‘Whilst the result was disappointing, for the boys concerned to reach the final was a huge achievement in itself. As the Devon County Secretary said when he gave out the medals, to see Trinity in the finals was great, if unexpected, and the boys really sorted things out in the second half and gave a much better account of themselves. I am very proud of them!’
